Description

Original program for the "Ceremony of the Unveiling of the Washington Monument Van Horn Bequest" at Newark, New Jersey, on November 2, 1912, six pages, 6.25 x 9, featuring a handsome image of the equestrian statue inside. Designed by the Scottish-American sculptor J. Massey Rhind, the statue depicts General George Washington saying farewell to the troops of the Continental Army on November 2, 1783, and was dedicated on the anniversary of that event in 1912. In very good condition, with some foxing, staining, corner creasing, and fraying to the binding ribbon. Accompanied by an original engraved invitation to the dedication ceremony, a "Compliments of J. Massey Rhind" card, and a pamphlet about Washington's farewell. The construction of the outdoor statue, situated in Newark's Washington Park, was funded by the bequest of Amos H. Van Horn, owner of one of the largest furniture stores in Newark.
