Career United States Army officer (1827–1893) who served on the Pacific Coast in the early stages of the Civil War, before taking an assignment as Commandant of Cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1864. Uncommon 4.5 x 6 albumen portrait of Henry M. Black in uniform, affixed to its original 9.75 x 12.75 mount, neatly signed on the mount in ink, "Col. H. M. Black. Comd't of Cadets." In very good to fine condition, with some marginal creasing, foxing, and staining.
