British Army officer (1720–1806) who served as a major general during the American War of Independence; he had also served as the colonial governor of British East Florida from 1764 to 1771. Revolutionary War–dated manuscript DS, signed “James Grant, M. Genl.,” one page, 6 x 3.75, December 13, 1776. Manuscript loyalty oath certificate, in full: "I do certifie that the John Carter has taken the oath agreeable to the Proclamation of the 30th Nov'r 1776." In fine condition.
The "Proclamation" referred to—an offer of unconditional pardon to those willing to swear a loyalty oath to the King—was promulgated by Admiral Richard Howe and General William Howe on November 30, 1776, allowing for clemency for those American revolutionaries who laid down their arms and returned home.
