Description

Rare original ‘dog tag’ belonging to Union soldier Austin Washburn. The bronze-tone medallion, 1˝ in diameter, features a front design of an embossed eagle gripping arrows and an olive branch, with raised lettering, "War of 1861, United States”; and the reverse is stamped: “A. Washburn, Co. C, 15th Reg, NH V, Enfield." The upper portion bears a small drilled hole for display purposes. In fine condition. Austin Washburn of Enfield, New Hampshire, was mustered into the 15th New Hampshire Infantry on October 31, 1862, and served until August 13, 1863. His unit fought in the battle of Port Hudson, Louisiana.
