Signed book: Gone With the Wind. First edition, second printing (June 1936). NY: The Macmillan Company, 1936. Hardcover, 6 x 8.75, 1037 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in fountain pen, "To Mr. and & Mrs. Eugene Kelcy, from, Margaret Mitchell, with many thanks!" Autographic condition: fine, with scattered foxing to the signed page. Book condition: VG-/None, with light foxing to textblock, some staining to boards, wear to spine ends, and edgewear. Housed in a custom-made quarter morocco slipcase with chemise.
Accompanied by a vintage glossy 3.5 x 5.5 photo of Mitchell standing with Edwin Granberry, author and Rollins College professor, and Henry Herschel Birckell (right), literary editor of the New York Post; the reverse bears a "Kelcy Photo & Art Shop" stamp. Birckell invited newly successful author Margaret Mitchell to Blowing Rock, North Carolina, to escape the mayhem of fans that flocked to meet her after the publication of Gone With the Wind in 1936.
The first edition, first printing of Gone With the Wind numbered only 10,000 copies and was printed with an incorrect publication date of May 1936. These inaccurate first printings and the ensuing corrected second printing of 25,000 copies were both released to the American public in June 1936.
