Description

Calhoun introduces a Southerner "engaged in the manufacture of cotton" to the North's "cotton establishments"

Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. ALS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, April 24, 1845. Handwritten letter to industrialist Abbot Lawrence, for whom the mill city Lawrence, Massachusetts, is named. In part: "This will be handed to you by my neighbor & friend, B. F. Sloan Esq., to whom I take the liberty of introducing you. Mr. Sloan is one of the few of our citizens, who have engaged in the manufacture of cotton; and he visits Boston with the intention of looking at your cotton establishments, with the view of making himself better acquainted with the business." In fine condition. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Calhoun, featuring his facsimile signature.
