The Sting, a caper film starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford as professional grifters, made over $68,000,000 in the North American box office, and it was the highest-grossing film of 1974. For his participation, Newman received top billing, $500,000 and a percentage of the profits—some of which had to be recovered through audits and litigation. Lawsuits related to royalties due from The Sting continued into the late 1980s.
