Description

"This man must be crazy"—five years before shooting President Garfield, an unhinged Guiteau aims to settle a libel suit: "Face the music!"

ALS signed “Charles J. Gutieau,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Law Offices of Charles J. Guiteau letterhead, September 18, 1876. Handwritten letter to James Gordon Bennett, in part: "My case was on the Circuit Calendar last year…& now it can be restored & tried at any time. Tell Mr. Townshend to look again! You may as well make up your mind to settle this suit. If you do not, I shall try it in October. I am perfectly willing to give Mr. Townshend ample security for costs in this case. I write you again, because Mr. Townshend hates to settle a libel suit; but what else can you do in this case? The more you look at it the more you will see it. Face the music!" Annotated on the reverse in ink: "This man must be crazy. I sent on his letters as they may be useful some day." In very good to fine condition, with multiple intersecting folds, and a repaired torn area to the top edge.
