Scarce World War II-dated glossy 10.25 x 8 photo of the cast of a Christmas pantomime of Aladdin, which was performed at Windsor Castle in December of 1943, signed in the lower border in fountain pen, “Elizabeth” and “Margaret,” who are both pictured to center standing at either side of Hubert Tannar, Headmaster of the Royal School in Windsor Great Park. The reverse bears a Studio Lisa credit stamp. Includes a leather presentation display with a printed copy of the program. In fine condition, with some scattered light creasing.
Christmas pantomimes were performed in the Waterloo Chamber of Windsor Castle between 1941 and 1944. The pantomimes were the idea of Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who both held leading roles in the productions. The princesses were encouraged by their parents, the King and Queen, who thought the productions would add Christmas cheer to the local children. The pantomimes were written and produced by Hubert Tannar, and performers included local children (some evacuees) and friends of the Princesses, with occasional help from service personnel based in the Windsor area. There was always an enthusiastic audience, and all monies raised from the admission charge went to the Wool Fund, to supply knitting wool for the making of comforters for the armed forces.
