Description

Physician and signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire (1729-1795) who served as that state's governor from 1790 to 1794. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.25 x 12.25, December 2, 1791. As governor of New Hampshire, Josiah Bartlett appoints John Southmayd as "Captain of the fourth company in the fourteenth Regiment of Militia, in the said State of New-Hampshire." Boldly signed at the conclusion by Governor Josiah Bartlett, and countersigned by Secretary Joseph Pearson. The upper left retains the original embossed paper seal. In very good condition, with toning and small areas of paper loss along the edges and folds, impinging upon but not touching the signature.
