Celebrated soprano (1820–1887), known as the 'Swedish Nightingale,' who, under the management of P. T. Barnum, became the most renowned and highly paid singer of her day. Two ALSs, both signed "Jenny Lind Goldschmidt," both three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7. The first, April 28, 1864, Clifton Hill House (she once shattered a window at this house with her voice) graciously thanks an admirer for a gift of flowers and explains why she must give them away, in part: "As I was afraid of their beauty being crushed in the railroad. Trusting that God will bring you and Mr. Buchanan peace and hope for trial and suffering.” The second, Oct. 24 [no year], Oak Lea, to a Madame Benecke arranging a time for dinner, in full: “Mr. Goldschmidt comes from Town quite worn out on Fridays, and has his dinner at 7 o’clock as he eats nothing the whole morning. So we shall come as I proposed in my last note—about ½ past 8 to you on Friday as we could not possibly come earlier.” In overall fine condition, with a repaired separation at the hinge of the 1864 letter, and the other letter affixed to a cardstock sheet. Accompanied by an engraving of Lind entitled “The Prima Donna” and an illustrated sheet music song “My Home, My Happy Home” from “Jenny Lind’s Songs,” published by Geo. P. Reed, Boston, [1849].
