Description

"A thousand less important & interesting things hold me their prisoner"

American clergyman (1835-1893) best known as the lyricist of the popular Christmas carol 'O Little Town of Bethlehem.' ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 8, April 23, 1891. Handwritten letter from Boston to "Mr. Pike," in part: "I thank you for your pleasant letter which I wish I could answer at the length which it deserves. But a thousand less important & interesting things hold me their prisoner & I can only send this line to say how gladly I should accept your kind invitation to come to Rowley if I could & how hopelessly impossible it seems. I shall very possibly go to Europe in the month of June. If I do not, it will be because I am tied here with work I cannot leave. But, anyway, be sure that I still want to come & shall come if I can. And that I thank you most heartily for asking me. I can see your delightful village now in the calm afternoon & it makes Life peaceful even to think of it. I send you my kindest greeting. May you have all best blessings." In fine condition.
