Description

Manuscript DS, signed “George R,” one page both sides, 9.5 x 14.5, November 12, 1760. Official military order issued to the "Colonel of Our second Battalion of the Surrey Militia," instructing him to hold courts martial. In part: "Whereas by the Acts for the better ordering of the Militia Forces in that part of Great Britain called England, it is enacted that the officers of the Militias and private Militia men shall during the time of their being embodied and drawn out be subjected and made liable to all such Articles of War, Rules and Regulations as shall be then by Act of Parliament in force for the Discipline and good Government of any of Our Forces in Great Britain, And Whereas agreeable to the said Acts We have ordered the Militia for the County of Surrey to be embodied and drawn out, We have therefore thought fit hereby to authorize and direct you from time to time to call assemble and hold Courts Martial and to be President of the same." Signed at the head by King George III. The paper seal affixed at the upper left remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, and splitting to the ends of the horizontal folds.
