Description

English track and field athlete (1899–1978) who was the 1924 Olympic champion in the 100-meter sprint, a feat depicted in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. He was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and into the England Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. Two items: a vintage ballpoint signature, “Harold M. Abrahams, Jump a long way!,” on an off-white slip affixed to a 6 x 4 card; and an exceedingly rare softcover copy of Sprinting by Harold M. Abrahams, issue no. 61 of Spalding’s Athletic Library (Group XII), 93 pages, 5 x 6.75, published circa 1925 by Renwick of Otley in London, and containing 13 chapters: Introduction, A Few Scientific Considerations, Some General Principles, General Training, Starting, Striding and Arm Action, The 220 yards, Training for the Olympic Games, A Day's Competition, From the Trainer's View-Angle, ‘Getting the Wind Up,’ What is Sprinting?, and Equipment. In overall very good to fine condition, with several stamps to opening and closing pages of the book, which bears scattered wear to the covers, including creases, paper loss, and some stains. A unique Olympic treasure as copies of this book are virtually unobtainable.
