Description

"During construction this piece of California Redwood was used in the Golden Gate Bridge catwalk"

Wooden relic from the catwalk used during the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, measuring approximately 6˝ x 3.5˝ x .25˝, featuring an image of the completed bridge and the text: "A Part of the Bridge. During construction this piece of California Redwood was used in the Golden Gate Bridge catwalk." The reverse is painted gray and features splatters of the landmark's distinctive orange vermilion paint. Complete with its original mailing box and souvenir booklet from May 1937, proclaiming the bridge as "The Eighth Wonder of the Modern World," and describing the importance of the catwalk: "This souvenir is a part of the catwalks, or footbridges, used in building the Golden Gate Bridge. It is still in its natural state. The paint spots are drippings from the actual painting of the bridge; the holes and worn spots were made by nails and the workers' shoes…Could this small piece of Redwood talk, what a fascinating story it would tell of the spinning of these two huge cables over the largest single span in the World—4200 feet from tower to tower." Additionally includes two original vintage postcard photos of the Golden Gate Bridge, captioned "Across the Golden Gate stretch the Catwalks of the Golden Gate Bridge" and "Golden Gate Bridge, Span 1 mile long." In overall fine condition, with small tears to one flap of the Redwood souvenir's mailing box.
