ALS signed “U. S. Grant, General,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, Head Quarters Armies of the United States letterhead, January 7, 1867. Handwritten letter to H. A. Smythe, collector of customs at New York City, in part: "This will introduce you to Capt. G. M. Livingston who I have known since the arrival of the Army in the James River in 1864, as one of the most efficient commanders serving in the transportation business for the Government. Capt. L. is well known in the Hudson River when he has commanded river steamers for many years. From what I know of him personally he must be able to give the best of references from his employers and many acquaintances in that locality. Capt. Livingston is seeking other employment now and I cheerfully endorse his capacity and integrity…He commanded the Hd. Qrs. boat on the James River for a number of months which gave me a better opportunity of knowing him than I had of knowing any other Steamer Commander." In very good to fine condition, with partial edge separations to folds and some scattered staining.
