Description

Union major general (1822–1901) who fought at Antietam and Second Bull Run. Porter was court-martialed in 1863 for disobeying an order from Gen. Pope to attack but was exonerated in 1878. Civil War-dated ALS signed “F. J. Porter,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, May 18, 1861. Handwritten letter to a "Captain," written from Philadelphia. In part: "From some hitch in the mail your letter reached me only last night…Route hence to Washington open to everyone causing no delay whatever, and I hope it will continue so, though I fear Maryland is only held under by military oppression or presence…If a strong force can be paraded in front of the secessionists of Virginia—strong enough not to be attacked—the secessionists will wilt. But we must not meet with a defeat anywhere. Another such victory as Sumpter will unite the whole South against us. I hope there will be no fight—but if there is—it will be carried on so that our enemy will beware of us in future." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original sales folder from early 20th century antiquarian bookseller Ernest Dressel North.
