Description

ALS signed “J. S. Mill,” one page, 4.5 x 6.75, January 22, 1866. Addressed from Avignon, France, a handwritten letter to publisher Nicholas Trubner, in full: “I fortunately have a copy of the book on [Auguste] Comte here. I will make the corrections in that copy and send it to Messrs. Childs.” In fine condition. Accompanied by an ALS in French from Trubner, forwarding the Mill letter to an autograph-collecting friend.

Auguste Comte (1798-1857) was a French philosopher and writer who formulated the doctrine of positivism; he was also a close friend and collaborator of John Stuart Mill. Nicholas Trubner (1817-1884) was a German-English publisher, bookseller, and linguist. Mill's Auguste Comte and Positivism had been published by Trubner in 1865.
