ALS, one page, 7.5 x 9.75, May 10, 1824. Handwritten letter to Capt. Alden Partridge, founder and president of Norwich University in Vermont, expressing his desire to attend the school. In part: "Having a desire to acquire some knowledge of military tactics, and at the same time to pursue some of the branches of literature, I have been recommended to your school as affording the best rules of education, for both the soldier & citizen. The regular period for admission I find to be nearly two months distant, and I have merely addressed you at this time, to enquire, if I could receive admission the present month. Please write me sir if I can;—and also whether I can receive a course of instruction in Mathematicks, Chemistry, & the French language without attending to the other branches that are taught at your seminary."
