Description

Confederate admiral (1800-1874) who captained the ironclad CSS Virginia during the Civil War. ALS signed “Frank'n Buchanan,” one page, 8 x 10, October 18, 1849. Letter to J. M. Read, in part: "I have not been in command of the Naval School [Annapolis] since my return from the Gulf of Mexico at the close of the war, but it affords me pleasure to give you all the information you require on the subject of Mid't appointment. I enclose a copy of the regulations which at present govern the school, a circular from the Navy Dept. ,and a copy of the new regulations lately made by a 'Board' of officers now in sessions (of which I am a member) in Washington to 'reorganize the rules and regulations of the School.'" On the adjoining page, Buchanan signs a postscript with his initials, "It will afford me pleasure to give you any further information on the subject you may require. F. B." In fine condition.
