Politician, soldier, and diplomat (1831–1896) who was part of the 'Iron Brigade' during the Civil War, fighting at Antietam and Gettysburg, during which he was severely wounded and lost his left arm. He went on to serve three terms as governor of Wisconsin, then as United States minister to Spain. Civil War–dated State of Wisconsin General Fund check, 7.75 x 3.5, filled out in another hand and signed by Fairchild, "Lucius Fairchild," payable to Pat Moran for $41.25, April 29, 1865. In fine condition.
