Description

Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. Partly-printed DS, signed "J. C. Calhoun," one page, 7.5 x 9, February 5, 1819. Confirmation of a pension for a veteran of the Revolution, headed "War Department, Revolutionary Claim." In part: "I Certify That, in conformity with the Law of the United States, of the 19th of March, 1818, Joseph Britton late a Lieutenant in the Army of the Revolution, is inscribed in the on the Pension List, Roll of the Tennessee Agency, at the rate of 20 dollars per month." The white seal affixed to the lower left remains fully intact. In very good to fine condition, with some light soiling and foxing, and archival tape repairs to separations along intersecting folds.
