Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 7.75 x 10, January 21, 1875. President Grant directs the Secretary of State to “affix the Seal of the United States to my letter to His Imperial Majesty Alexander II, Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russias (Mr. Boker’s credentials).” Signed crisply at the conclusion by U. S. Grant. In very fine condition. Encapsulated and graded by PSA/DNA as "MINT 9."

George Henry Boker (1823–1890) was an American poet, playwright, and diplomat, who served as the U.S. Minister to Constantinople from 1871 to 1875 when his position was transferred to Russia, which was considered a more prestigious appointment. The new political administration under President Rutherford B. Hayes viewed Boker unfavorably and, despite securing support from Emperor Alexander II of Russia, Boker was recalled in 1878.
