ALS in pencil from a soldier dated to March 10, 1860, two months before Abraham Lincoln won the nomination at the 1860 Republican National Convention. Handwritten by C. H. Merrill to his mother, the letter, 4.75 x 7.75, one page both sides, addressed from “Newport News,” reads, in part: “I shant have the chance to write to you for some time as we are about to march again…things are packed up ready to start…I don't know whether we are going to Suffolk or Norfolk…to help reinforce our folk there…I want you to write all about the election.” In fine condition.
