Lyric booklet from Box One of Frank Zappa’s The Old Masters box set series, 28 pages, 12 x 12, signed and inscribed on the front cover in blue ballpoint, “To Rick, F. Zappa.” In fine condition, with light handling wear. Accompanied by a registration card for the Old Masters Box Set, a Barfko-Swill catalog with order form, and a Munchkin Music order form for the Frank Zappa Guitar Book.
The consignor notes that the booklet was signed in person at the famous 1985 Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) Senate hearing. On September 19, 1985, Frank Zappa, Dee Snider, and John Denver testified before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee on ‘the subject of the content of certain sound recordings and suggestions that recording packages be labeled to provide a warning to prospective purchasers of sexually explicit or other potentially offensive content.’
In his 30-minute testimony, Zappa asserted that ‘the PMRC proposal is an ill-conceived piece of nonsense which fails to deliver any real benefits to children, infringes the civil liberties of people who are not children, and promises to keep the courts busy for years dealing with the interpretational and enforcemental problems inherent in the proposal's design. It is my understanding that, in law, First Amendment issues are decided with a preference for the least restrictive alternative. In this context, the PMRC’s demands are the equivalent of treating dandruff by decapitation.’
