Description

British general (1730–1795) who served as Commander-in-Chief in North America from 1778 to 1782. Revolutionary War-dated LS signed “H. Clinton,” one page, 8 x 12.5, January 14, 1779. Letter to Lord George Germain, in full: "I have the honor of transmitting to your Lordship the enclosed Letter which has been just now delivered to me by the Superintendent of the Port, by which it appears there is reason to apprehend, that an improper use has been made of the Indulgence granted to the Merchants by the Commissioners, in order to prevent the loss of British Merchandize, for which there was no demand here. As I may find it expedient to put a stop to the Exportation of British Manufactures, I thought it proper to give your Lordship the earliest Information of this matter."
