Description

Union Army soldier (1839–1915) who received the Medal of Honor for his actions as a lieutenant colonel and regimental commander at the Battle of Prairie Grove; he went on to represent Illinois in Congress. LS, three pages both sides, 5 x 7.75, United States Pension Office letterhead, October 22, 1886. Letter to Eugene B. Payne, in part: "I want you to make application for the position of Special Pension Examiner; and make application to be examined before the Civil Service Commission for that position. I know well your ability and capacity to fill this position to the entire satisfaction of the Government, and as I desire to secure good men for the public service, I suggest this course to you." Handsomely cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and biographical plaque to an overall size of 25.5 x 20, with a window in the backing for viewing the reverse. In fine condition.
