Description

TLS, one page, 6.25 x 8.25, White House letterhead, December 1, 1921. Letter to Lewis Strauss, an investment banker at Kuhn, Loeb & Co. who would go on to chair the United States Atomic Energy Commission. In full: "I regret deeply that I cannot be with you on the night of December fourth, to give a personal word of encouragement in the campaign which you are about to inaugurate. I have followed with deep interest and sympathy the splendid relief work undertaken in the past by the Joint Distribution Committee, and have entertained profound admiration for the spirit of service which has inspired this work. I am glad to know that you propose to continue activities in Eastern Europe, and wish you every success in your effort to raise the necessary funds for it." Gorgeously cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and plaque to an overall size of 22.5 x 24.5. In fine condition. In the aftermath of World War I, Strauss worked with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to relieve the suffering of Jewish refugees, who were often neglected by other bodies.
