Description

A true mission control treasure—Gene Kranz’s Apollo 9 flight director’s logbook, with copious real-time handwritten notes from launch to splashdown

Gene Kranz’s official flight director’s logbook for the historic Apollo 9 mission, containing extensive handwritten notes made in real-time by Kranz and other flight personnel at Houston’s Mission Control Center. The bracket-bound manual, 9 x 11.5, 100+ pages, annotated on the front cover in black felt tip, “A9 F.D. Log” and “Apollo 9/4, 1-4-8,” contains comprehensive documentation on the Apollo 9 mission with numerous pages annotated in ballpoint or pencil in Kranz’s recognizable blocky handwriting. From launch to splashdown, the manual covers all key events of the mission, including EVA procedures, docking reports between the CSM Gumdrop and LM Spider, and ample instrument and crew updates; both Rusty Schweickart and Jim McDivitt became ill during the flight. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Stephen Hankow of Farthest Reaches, which states that this manual “was obtained directly from Flight Director Kranz.” Packed with fascinating, unabashed mission-critical notes, this Kranz-used MCC logbook is of immense appeal and significance—the Apollo 9 mission is historic as it is the first flight of a lunar module, and the first full shakeout test flight in Earth orbit of all the major Apollo equipment, including the command module, command service module, and lunar module.
