Description

President Truman writes to his soon-to-be Attorney General

TLS as president, one page, 5.75 x 8, White House letterhead, January 10, 1948. Letter to Rhode Island Senator J. Howard McGrath, in full: “I am enclosing you a copy of a letter which I have just received from Bill O’Connor. He is the son of J. F. T. and a bright young man. I thought you would like to see his letter.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 11 x 14. In fine condition, with a rusty paperclip stain to the letterhead.

Truman appointed McGrath Attorney General of the United States on August 24, 1949. After McGrath had refused to cooperate in the ‘five percenters’ scandal, a controversy involving accusations of corruption and favoritism in the selection of employees for the Justice Department, Truman asked for and received McGrath's resignation on April 3, 1952.
