Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 13 x 8.25, January 14, 1820. President Monroe grants Michael Giltner of Clark County, Indiana, a tract "containing one hundred & sixty acres of the Lands directed to be sold at Jeffersonville." Neatly signed at the conclusion by President James Monroe and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Josiah Meigs. The white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. In fine condition, with light soiling and a few small stains.
Michael Giltner (1778–1837) was born in Pennsylvania. His family moved to Kentucky around 1787. He married his cousin Catherine Giltner (1777–1849) in Bourbon County, KY. The couple’s children included Jacob, Abraham, Elizabeth, John and Michael. The family moved to Indiana around 1808. The family appeared as farmers on the 1820 U.S. Census for Clark County, IN. The couple is buried at Britan Cemetery, also known as Pisgah Cemetery, in Clark County, IN.
