Description

TLS as president, one page, 6.5 x 9, White House letterhead, April 12, 1924. Letter to M. C. Brush, in full: “I am sorry I cannot attend your dinner on the 24th. I looked forward, as you know, to being present last year but circumstances made it impossible. Perhaps I shall see you when I am in New York on the 22nd.” In very good to fine condition, with faint edge toning, and slightly irregular (albeit inexplicable) trimming to the left edge.

Matthew C. Brush (ca. 1877-1940) was a wealthy New York industrialist and financier who was a friend of and advisor to Coolidge, especially in matters of transportation, such as ocean shipping, cross country railroads and city street cars. Brush, sometimes called shrewd and careful, was active in the Republican Party, supporting Coolidge and other politicians. Brush was a Republican presidential elector who had a collection of almost 2,000 toy elephants, mostly gifts from friends. They were made of gold, ivory, wood, glass, precious stone and metal. He carried some with him in his pockets.
