Hand-addressed and free-franked mailing envelope, 5 x 2.75, addressed by Millard Fillmore to “Thomas H. Bond, Esq., Oswego, N.Y.,” and franked in the upper right corner, “Free, M. Fillmore, V.P.” Postmarked in Washington in December (1849). Reverse bears remnants of the original red wax seal. In fine condition, with repaired tears to two corners. Fillmore's term as Vice President was quite brief, lasting only 17 months, when he assumed the presidency after the death of John Tyler.
Thomas Hinkley Bond (1804-1882), like Fillmore, was an attorney and Whig Party member who lived in western New York State. Bond, a Yale Law School graduate, owned a successful milling and flour business in Oswego. He was a New York State Senator from 1848 to 1849.
