Manuscript DS, one page, 7 x 6, October 28, 1848. Brief letter issued from the Comptroller’s Office in Albany, directed to the cashier of the Commercial Bank of Albany, in full: “Your Quarterly report for Sep. 30/48 is received & filed.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Millard Fillmore as the Comptroller of New York. In very good condition, with scattered foxing, and stains along the edges from old masking tape on the back.
Fillmore dispatched this letter as comptroller for New York State, the first to be elected by a general ballot. Though serving only one year in that post, Fillmore revised New York's banking system and made it a model for the future National Banking System. Nominated for the vice presidential slot in the November 1848 presidential election, delegates believed Fillmore's presence would help the Whig Party carry the populous state of New York.
