Description

LS signed “Z. Taylor, Lt. Col., 1st Regt. U.S. Infy., Comd'g,” one page, 7.75 x 9.5, May 1, 1828. Letter to Adjutant General Roger Jones in Washington, D.C., sent from Taylor's headquarters at New Orleans. In full: "I have the honor to enclose herewith muster rolls of the four companies of the 1st Regt. at the post under my command for the months of March & April last." In fine condition, with mounting remnants along the reverse top edge.

Taylor served in the US Army from 1808 until 1849, rising to the rank of Major General. He was in the War of 1812, two Indian wars in the 1830s, and the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848. He served under Presidents Thomas Jefferson through James K. Polk.

He was stationed in New Orleans in early 1827, in Baton Rouge that summer, and back in New Orleans that fall. This letter was written the very day Taylor left New Orleans headed northward to command Fort Snelling for a year in what would later be Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Jones, a Virginia native, was the longest serving Adjutant General of the US Army in US history, in that position from 1825 to 1852. He was in the US Marine Corps from 1809 to 1812, and the US Army from 1812 to 1852. He served in the War of 1812, and he had many relatives who served in the US military in various wars.

Taylor, also a Virginia native, served as the twelfth US President from March 4, 1849 to July 9, 1850. The Whig Party member was the first president elected who had never held a political office. He died of a stomach illness after a little more than a year in office.
