Confederate general (1832–1904) who surrendered Lee's army to Union General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain at Appomattox Court House. After the war, he served as a senator from Georgia, as well as the state's 53rd governor. Citizen's Bank of Georgia check, 8 x 3, filled out in another hand and signed by Georgia's Confederate Governor Joseph E. Brown, payable to John B. Gordon's order for $1,800, December 5, 1874, endorsed on the reverse by Gordon, "Pay to W. S. Gordon, J. B. Gordon," also signing for his brother below. In fine condition.
