Description

Original semi-glossy 10.5 x 13.25 photograph of two soldiers in the Battle of Saipan during the Pacific Campaign of World War II, affixed to a 16 x 20 mount, titled and signed on the mount in pencil by the photographer, "Saipan - Eugene Smith." Matted to an overall size of 18 x 22, with the opening cropped to the image area. In very fine condition.

Photojournalist W. Eugene Smith was on Saipan during the Pacific Campaign while on assignment for Life Magazine. He described the island as 'some of the worst terrain that Yanks have ever been called upon to dislodge an enemy from,' and his resulting photos bear testimony to the horrors of war and the heroism of American Marines during World War II. Considered the 'father of modern photojournalism,' Smith pioneered the photographic essay in the 1940s and 1950s.
