Description

Gettysburg shoemaker (1793-1872) who, upon seeing the Union soldiers march past his home, joined the Iron Brigade at the Battle of Gettysburg at the age of 69. He was wounded, but survived to become a national celebrity. Rare vintage 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Burns holding his Enfield rifle, signed on the reverse in bold ink, "John L. Burns, Gettysburg." Published by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York, from a “Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery.” Double-matted and framed with an artistic print of Burns at Gettysburg and a biographical plaque to an overall size of 24 x 21.5; a window to the frame backing reveals the front of the photo. In very good to fine condition, with rounded trimmed corners, and some emulsion loss to the photo side.
