Description

Queen of Portugal from 1777 until her death (1734-1816) Known as Maria the Pious in Portugal and Maria the Mad in Brazil, she was the first undisputed queen regnant of Portugal and the first monarch of Brazil. LS in Latin, signed “Maiestatis Testra, Bona Soror, et Consanguinea, Maria R.,” one page, 8.5 x 13.75, November 24, 1780. An untranslated letter sent to King George III, the ruling monarch of Great Britain and Ireland. The letter retains its original large white paper seal. In fine condition. An uncommon and fascinating association piece between two ‘mad rulers’ — in February 1792, when Maria was deemed insane, she was treated by Francis Willis, the same physician who attended the British king George III.
