Uncommon bronze-tone participation medal issued for the Berlin 1936 Summer Olympics. Designed by Otto Placzek, 70 mm, 84 gm, with the front featuring an embossed image of a carrier pigeon with text, “Berlin 1936, 1 August,” and the reverse bearing the Olympic rings and text: “XI Olympiade, Berlin 1936.” These medals were presented to carrier pigeon breeders who offered their birds for the festivities of the opening day. A purported 20,000 pigeons were transported to the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
