Description

Pioneering lawyer, educator, and politician (1936-1996) who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. A Democrat, she was the first African-American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction and the first Southern African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, University of Texas at Austin letterhead, November 9, 1983. Letter to Phillip L. Berman of the Center for the Study of Contemporary Belief, in part: "Thank you for your letter and invitation to write an essay for Belief in Action. Because of numerous commitments already for this academic year, I regret that I do not have the time to write such an essay." In fine condition, with some light creasing to the left edge.
