French novelist (1840-1897) known for his controversial political and social views. ALS in French, signed “Alph. Daudet,” one page, 4 x 2.5, no date. Handwritten letter on one of his personal calling cards, in part (translated): "I thank you, dear sir, for your marvelous album; nothing at either Litzel's or at Hachette's can be compared with it. My little one is enraptured. The older one is going to translate for me several chapters of M. Eckstein's novel. Alas! I do not understand German—at least very little. I long to read the translation of 'Sturmflut.' I cannot write a review on Spielhagen without having read, and well read, him." In fine condition, with some faint toning.
