Clara Barton Autograph Letter Signed on the Red Cross and First-Aid

Description

After resigning from the Red Cross, Barton promotes first aid across the nation: "I never saw such leaps as the work is taking. It more than moves on, it jumps"

Teacher and humanitarian (1821-1912) best known for founding the relief organization the American Red Cross. ALS, three pages, 8.5 x 11, The National First Aid Association of America letterhead, November 2, 1905. Handwritten letter to Mary Kennell, secretary of the First Aid Association of America. In part: "You perhaps noticed that I did answer the call for '11,000 women' and went to the 'Federation of Clubs' at Elizabeth, N.Y. last week, and am only home again today...I am sure that the idea of a non-providing committee (if that term expresses it) will be not only the most efficient, but least embarrassing of any arrangement that could be made...I never saw such leaps as the work is taking. It more than moves on, it jumps. I constantly ask—who is behind it? Who opens its doors? Who is pushing it through? It stands where the unknown, struggling Red Cross stood twenty years ago; but not as it stood. Has not the Red Cross blazed the way a little, perhaps? Has it not left some trails for it to follow? Will not these make the road to success the shorter, and easier? Let us hope so and be grateful, and happy. I think the 'Federation of Clubs of New Jersey' will be interested in knowing more of the First-Aid—We left one of the leaflets that you gave Mrs. Pope, with the President, Mrs. Emma W. Newbury...They are an active body of women, and carry out many aims—They know nothing of First-Aid—I shall send Mrs. Newbury a copy of my little talk at the Natural History Camp." In fine condition. Clara Barton founded the National First Aid Society in 1905, the year of this letter, in order to promote local first aid programs.
