Manuscript DS, signed “George R,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 12, January 8, 1805. Document addressed John Lord Eldon, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, directing him to affix the Great Seal to an instrument "containing our Full Power to Our Right Trusty and Wellbeloved Counsellor Granville Leveson Gower...Our Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Our Good Brother the Emperor of all the Russias; authorizing and empowering him to treat and agree, with the Minister or Ministers of our said good Brother, and of other Princes who may be desirous to accede to any Treaty or Treaties which shall be concluded between Us and Our aforesaid Good Brother, the Emperor of all the Russias." Signed at the head by King George III, and countersigned at the conclusion by Home Secretary Robert Jenkinson, Lord Hawkesbury. A five-page true copy of the instrument, penned in Latin, is annexed to the document, bound together with a purple silk ribbon. The white paper seal, affixed over part of King George III's signature, remains intact. In fine condition. A handsome and charming diplomat, Granville Leveson-Gower concluded a short-lived treaty with Russia against Napoleon, the first of many diplomatic successes.
