Two original glossy Associated Press wire photos from the Battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945: a 10.25 x 6.75 photo of a landing craft filled with US Marines headed for the beaches of Iwo Jima, taken by Joe Rosenthal on February 19th, with Mount Suribachi looming in the background; and a 6.75 x 8.5 photo of the wreckage of United States landing craft along the shore, showing the stiff opposition the landing force faced from the Japanese. Both are captioned and stamped "AP Wirephoto" on the reverse. In fine condition. Joe Rosenthal would famously photograph the flag-raising on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945, five days after the Marines landed on the island—one of the enduring images of World War II and of the 20th century as a whole.
