Description

Signed book: Red Rubber: The Story of the Rubber Slave Trade of the Congo by E. D. Morel. NY: The Nassau Print, 1906. Hardcover, 5.25 x 7.5, 213 pages. The front pastedown bears Garrett's ownership initials and date, "R. G., Oct. 1907," above his affixed personal bookplate. Book condition: VG/None, with rubbing and soiling to the spine, and a later ownership signature ("W. Neumann") to the first free end page.

An investment banker and philanthropist from Baltimore, Maryland, Garrett (1875-1961) made his mark at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 when he earned first place in the discus throw and the shot put, becoming the inaugural champion in those events. He also attained second place in the high jump and the long jump in Athens, and, four years later in Paris, he was awarded bronze medals for the shot put and standing triple jump.
