Description

A note from Mick — "Your mate says you could put me at my ease, see you down at the pier, let's do the Southend freeze"

ANS signed “Mick Jagger, x,” penned in black ballpoint on a pink 3.75 x 6.75 sheet of notebook paper. The handwritten note, addressed to “Ingrid,” reads: “Your mate says you could put me at my ease, see you down at the pier, let's do the Southend freeze.” In very good condition, with several folds and overall creasing.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and by a letter of provenance from the original recipient, the singer Ingrid Mansfield-Allman: ‘‘I obtained this autograph by Mick Jagger when it was passed on to me by my friend Kirsty McColl in 1985 after he had seen me on Top of the Pops singing Southern Freeez in 1981. At the time she was married to producer Steve Lillywhite who had just been hired to produce their upcoming album Dirty Work which was released in 1986. I later met Mick & Keith during the recording of the album in 1985 where I had the opportunity to teach Keith Richards the words to a track they had been hoping to record for the album although he could only remember the first two lines. I overheard him sing the first two lines and spontaneously I sang the rest. During that brief one-off meeting, I was able to supply him with details he had [been] previously pursuing about the name of the artist and the track which then enabled them to include it on the Dirty Work album. The Track is called Winsome.”

Written by the Jamaican artist Half Pint, the song ‘Winsome’ appeared on his debut album from 1984, In Fine Style. The Rolling Stones covered the song on their album Dirty Work, but instead called it ‘Too Rude.’ The song was sung by guitarist Keith Richards instead of the usual lead singer, Mick Jagger. Ingrid Mansfield Allman is a British singer who worked with the likes of Ian Dury, Desmond Dekker, and Mary Wilson. She is probably best known as the lead vocalist on Freeez’s classic single ‘Southern Freeez.’
