Rare original orange 8.5 x 13 poster for “The Shining Costume Party” held at Prince’s Glam Slam nightclub in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Halloween, October 31, 1990, listing a $500 prize for best costume, and featuring three ‘love symbols,’ a pair of axes with the text “The Shining,” and the club’s address to the lower portion. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a couple of staple holes.
A rare and highly displayable association piece — the iconic Stanley Kubrick horror film The Shining featured Jack Nicholson, who had worked with Prince the year before on Tim Burton's Batman film. Prince party posters like this are extraordinarily scarce, especially examples that illustrate Prince's acute sense of humor.
In 1990, Prince opened a nightclub in his hometown Minneapolis called “Glam Slam,” named after one of his songs (the second single off the 1988 'Lovesexy' album). Frequented by celebrities, supermodels, and Prince insiders, Glam Slam became one of the city’s hot spots, providing him with a venue to host parties and promote musical artists he appreciated and admired. During the early years of the club, artists such as Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, and Tupac Shakur performed there. Prince also performed here himself 19 times in less than four years, as well as filming music videos, hosting parties, and sharing unreleased music with the DJ to play for those in attendance.
