Outstanding autograph musical manuscript by Charles Gounod, two pages on two musically lined sheets, 10.5 x 14, titled and signed on the front in ink, "There is a green hill far away..., Ch. Gounod, 9bre / 70,” who adds an inscription above, “a Madame Louisa Brown.” Written for voice and piano at a “And’te Moderato” pace, Gounod lengthily pens a total of 37 lines of music and lyrics to the Christian hymn ‘There is a green hill far away.’ Gounod, who composed a musical setting on the hymn's text in 1871, reportedly considered that it was ‘the most perfect hymn in the English language,’ due in part to its striking simplicity. Includes its original cloth-bound presentation folder titled in gilt: “There Is a Green Hill Far Away, Charles Gounod, Manuscript Song, Sept. 1870.” In very good to fine condition, with damage and a detached front cover to the slipcase, and light soiling, toning, and edge chipping to the manuscript.
