Description

De Havilland provides insight on her famous costar: "Errol was a proud, sensitive man, and though every bit as adventurous as his screen roles, I think he was rather more complex than these"

TLS, one page, 8.25 x 11.75, October 25, 1989. Letter to Errol Flynn biographer Tony Thomas, in full: “About your letter of October 3, 1989 - indeed I will try to supply you with a further paragraph for your Flynn book, following the guidelines you suggest. I saw Errol in either May or June of 1942 in Washington, D.C. where he had gone for his military service checkup. He was dining alone at Harvey's restaurant, and when he had finished his meal, he came over to the table where I was supping with John Huston. Errol seemed in a serious, intense mood and smoked a lot. He didn't talk about the reason he was in the Capital, but it all came out in the papers afterwards, together with the news that he had been turned down on physical grounds by the American Armed Services. I think this was a great blow to him and that later he felt deeply frustrated at not being able to serve in the War in some other significant way. Errol was a proud, sensitive man, and though every bit as adventurous as his screen roles, I think he was rather more complex than these. His own view of himself suffered several shocks within a short space of time — (1942-1943), and I think he never recovered from them. The rejection of the U.S. Government was one, and the other was the tawdry lawsuit by the young woman who brought against him a claim of statutory rape. His self-esteem was damaged permanently by these events, I do believe, and as the years rolled on his subsequent behaviour became almost self-punishing. Will the above serve your purpose?” In fine condition.
